Newspaper Reports of Orville Wright’s Crash
Columbus Evening Dispatch, 19 Sep 1908

In this editorial cartoon, an eagle rests on an uplifted arm with a sleeve in the style of Uncle Sam. The sleeve cuff reads “American Grit.” The left, outspread wing of the eagle has “Wilbur Wright Aeroplane” written along it. The right wing is broken, hanging limply down, with “Orville Wright Aeroplane”. The newspaper thus pays tribute to Orville Wright, who was injured when his airplane crashed two days earlier, due to a broken propeller blade. His passenger was fatally injured.
