Gerard Piel
(1 Mar 1915 - 5 Sep 2004)
American publisher was science editor of Life magazine (1939-1944). Then he purchased Scientific American (1947) with Dennis Flanagan as editor, Donald H. Miller as general manager, and a group of investors. As publisher, Piel helped revive the monthly magazine as a more sophisticated and authoritative monthly, with feature articles often written by experts, but accessible by an educated general public. Piel authored several books.

In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.
