American writer and conservationist who writes and often speaks about environmental topics. The River Why (1983) was not only his first book, but also the first novel to be published by the Sierra Club. He moved to Wyoming after 40 years living in western Oregon because the timber companies and the Forest Service devastated the forests on the coastal watersheds around his homeand all in less than four years.
