actor and screenwriter whose deadpan humour is evident in his performances (including Saturday Night Live on TV) and as co-creator and writer of the TV series Get Smart. Of the screenplays he wrote, The Graduate (with Calder Willingham) remains an outstanding work in the movie industry.
