English theologian who published The Sacred Theory of the Earth in Latin (1681) and English (1684) in which he tried to explain the Earths features, beginning with a period of chaos, followed by a deluge. He speculated the interior and surface of the Earth slowly undergo continual changes, from which the mountains resulted.
