American businesswoman who became the first woman from America to climb to the summit of Mount Everest in 1988 (though a few women from other countries had previously reached the top of the world’s highest mountain. She wrote a book about her experience, Many Mountains to Climb: Reflections on Competence, Courage, and Commitment (1999).
