George W(ilhelm) Merck
(29 Mar 1894 - 9 Nov 1957)
American pharmaceutical manufacturer and executive who, in 1929, became president of his father's Merck chemical manufacturing company. He began pioneering systematic research which yielded the first synthesis of several vitamins and the first American-made penicillin used to treat an infection.
